PAID Short-term Internship

ISI international student ministry internship in Ames (IA)

Ed and Margreet van Ouwerkerk work as missionaries to international students on Iowa State University (ISU) campus in Ames, Iowa. Ed and Margreet are both full time employees of the mission agency International Students Inc. (ISI) and are spiritually and financially supported by individual donors and by their two home churches: Baptist Church ‘Op Doortocht’ in Ede, The Netherlands, and First Evangelical Free Church of Ames. They want to give young people an opportunity to get mission experience as an intern in order for them to cast vision and to develop their own future plans with the Lord. Ed and Margreet would like to have two interns for three months, one American and one Dutch, during the coming two years. Funds for these internships have been set aside in Ed and Margreet’s ISI ministry account.

American Intern
The ideal American intern is a single (male or female) born-again Christian who has the desire to serve the Lord in a cross-cultural setting. The work will be 40 hours per week. The intern may be paid $7.25/hour. The person applying must be a committed Christian and should have an education on at least college level, have good emotional and spiritual health, speak articulated English, tolerate foreign food, and have a frugal lifestyle. The person should exhibit a pattern of daily Bible reading and prayer (also in a team) and be teachable. The period of the internship for an American candidate who is eligible to work in Iowa will be 3 months. The recruiting will be done in cooperation with the ISI regional director in compliance with ISI policies. The person who does not have their own housing in the Ames area will be offered a free private room with a separate bathroom and internet access available in Ed and Margreet’s home, which is within 15 minutes walking distance from the university campus.

The intern will join most of activities of Ed and Margreet and the local ISI-team (3 staff and 6 volunteers). The number of Ed and Margreet’s personal international contacts currently is approximately 60 students and 10 visiting scholars. Most of the internationals involved in the ministry are Chinese and are in ISU graduate school. The main duties for the intern will include: joining the preparations and hosting of fellowships at home and at church, teaching from the Bible, co-organizing social events, joining one-on-one Bible studies with students on campus, joining prayer meetings and movie nights, joining our weekly one-hour Chinese language class (if possible), reading Christian books and watching new study materials (DVD’s) and writing summaries of those. Writing bi-weekly ministry reports to us is part of the job. If the internship takes place in the summer, we will set up a special summer program with international students, who stay in Ames during the summer vacation. The summer program would take place during the period of May 15 through August 15. During a 4-week period in June while Ed and Margreet are unavailable, the supervision for the summer program will be done by ISI staff member Randy Hansen.

Dutch Intern
The job description and expectations of a Dutch intern will be developed at a later date.

Application process
If the intern wants to be paid, the application process needs to be started at least 3 months before hiring. The application process includes doing two or three modules online. Each module requires 10-15 hours of homework. The evaluation of each module will be done by a national ISI mentor through phone calls. The steps of the application process can be found on
